The Port of Barcelona will apply rebates to port fees for vessels that prove their sustainable environmental practices. To foster good environmental practices also in the maritime area, the Port of Barcelona will spend up to € 1 million in rebates for vessels meeting design and environmental practice standards. With these measures, the organisation recognises the three main incentive schemes used in European and world major ports such as the Environmental Ship Index, the Clean Shipping Index and the Green Award.
The measure came partially into effect on 1 July and was presented on 7 July as part of an information day aimed at members of the Barcelona Association of Shipping Agents. The initiative will allow a discount of 5% on the fees paid by vessels berthing at the Port of Barcelona. From next year, these rebates will be 20% for ships with auxiliary or propulsion motors using natural gas and a 50% rebate on fees for ships fuelled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This discount will reach 70% for vessels connecting to the wharfside power supply.
With this proposal, the Port is proving its firm commitment to environmental development. The goal is to foster good environmental practices of vessels in port, to attract ships with an environmentally friendly profile and reduce emissions generated by the Port of Barcelona's activity.
