From 15 to 18 July, what has now become one of the city's 'must attend' event sailing events will be held at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona. The 8th Puig Vela Classic is filling its sails and warming up its engines in an edition that has established itself as a benchmark in the world of classic sailing. This unique event in Europe will bring together the best fleet of classic and vintage Mediterranean vessels as well as the most important international personalities from the classic sailing sector.
After this sporting event brought together more than 800 sailors, and the many sailing fans that came day after day to enjoy the event in 2014, this year we are expecting another high turnout. The competition has now opened its registration period and created a pool of crew members on its Facebook page for sailors and skippers to contact each other to sail together during the race.
Legendary vessels
This summer Barcelona will again be the capital of competition sailing. The city will host nine century-old vessels of the Puig Vela Classic, which are a real slice of history, such as the Moonbeam IV - the ship on which Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly honeymooned in 1956 - or the Mariette, a ship seized by the US Coast Guard during World War II for monitoring the West Coast.
One characteristic element of the Puig Vela Classic in recent years has been the way in which it has brought the most sophisticated sailing sport event to Barcelona residents and tourists. The competition will be viewable from places such as the Port Vell, Barceloneta and Olympic Port.
