Taking advantage of the first anniversary of the twinning between the cities of Fort Lauderdale and Mataró, a Catalan business delegation travelled to Florida in March to promote the relationship between the two cities. The visit also served to explore new business opportunities, including the possibility of developing the Port of Mataró as a benchmark marina for the repair and maintenance of yachts travelling around the Mediterranean.
This was a return visit in response to that of several representatives from Fort Lauderdale who came to Mataró in summer 2014. On that occasion, the U.S. businessmen toured various sites such as the Port of Mataró and TecnoCampus university facilities, which are the two places that justify to a large extent the twinning agreement between both cities: looking for synergies between the respective ports and nautical clusters and academic collaboration between universities and vocational training institutions.
Since the twinning agreement was signed with Fort Lauderdale in February 2014, Mataró has joined with 17 cities around the world to become part of "Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International", a network for pooling global cooperation efforts in economic and business areas and developing international programmes.
