Between 2016 and 2017 the shipyards MB92 and Varador 2000 and the marinas OneOcean Port Vell, Marina Vela and Mataró Marina Barcelona will have invested up to 92.3 million Euros in their facilities. Their aim is to expand their capacity and the services destined to the super yachts, which are considered floating SMEs that inject to the local economy about two million Euros per year per boat.
The five facilities are part of the Barcelona Clúster Nàutic, the association of institutions and companies that works for the competitiveness of the marine industry in the Catalan capital, and with just over three years of life already has 84 associates.
To attract the super yachts fleet to Barcelona, as a base for Mediterranean cruises and as a base for repairs and maintenance, is one of the cluster’s lines of action. The marinas of the Barcelona’s metropolitan area have the capacity to accommodate a total of 300 of these yachts. It is estimated that each of them spends in the city where is docked around two million Euros per year, between maintenance costs, mooring, provisions and other expenses.
The largest investment is being made by MB92, a 76,000 square meter shipyard located in the Port of Barcelona and a world leader in superyachts’ maintenance, repair and refit. The company is investing a total of 45 million Euros in a new shiplift of 4,000 tons, with capacity to haul out boats up to 105 meters long. With this investment, MB92 will respond to the worldwide growing fleet of super yachts. Over a hundred boats between 35 and 200 meters long pass each year through the MB92 facilities.
The investment in the new marina located next to the W Barcelona Hotel, Marina Vela, is around 40 million Euros, of which three have been invested up to today. The works are expected to be completed in two to three months.
OneOcean Port Vell invested five million in 2016, with the last expansion stage of the marina, with which it gained eight new moorings for boats between 30 and 80 meters long in the Moll de Pescadors (Fishermen’s dock). The first stage of the marina’s transformation ended at the end of 2014 after an investment of 80 million Euros.
Varador 2000 manages a shipyard in Arenys de Mar which is the technical base for boats’ maintenance and repair and Mataró Marina Barcelona, the nautical base for super yachts. The company is investing 2.3 million Euros (1.1 in Mataró Marina Barcelona and 1.2 in the base of Arenys). It has already made 45% of the investment and it is estimated that it will reach 100% in September.

The Barcelona Clúster Nàutic represents a sector that is an economic engine for the city of Barcelona. According to a study carried out by the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona, the 305 companies in Barcelona related to the marine industry generate a total of 836 million Euros of direct, indirect and induced economic impact and up to 8,300 jobs. The 84 associates of the Barcelona Clúster Nàutic add a turnover of about 350 million Euros.
